- Subject: WINTALK SCREWED MY SYSTEM!!!
-
- I'm usually fairly mellow and tough to piss off, but this time I've about
- had it. I had Wintalk running in the background when I got a talk request.
- Wintalk promptly gave me a runtime error, which, frankly, didn't bother
- me much because it happens so regularly. Next Trumpet crashed, which still
- came as no suprise. THEN, Windows exited itself and rebooted my computer.
- Now I'm running Stacker, which is fairly secure, but not when you have a
- crash like that. About half of my system files were corrupted, including
- my command.com, my stacker files, and my autoexec. When I finally got all
- that sorted out, and my stacker drive working again, I found that EVERY
- directory besides root on my WHOLE hardrive was GONE. I had to reformat
- my whole drive, losing countless amounts of data. Has anyone else had
- severe Wintalk crashes? Is there a latest version that's better? I really
- love having it running, but this is just insane. any comments/suggestions?
-
- Later,
- Al

- Thanks to the a few replies from people via e-mail I have tried the suggestion
- of completely deleting the news.grp file and then clicking on the subscribe
- menu option. Instead of getting the 1900 or so newsgroups I had been receiving
- I got about 2950.
-
- I would guess the news.grp file came with the package and had only 1900 or so
- Usenet groups listed. Once that file was gone, the news reader was able to
- read the news group titles provided by my news feed and therefore all the
- other newsgroups suddenly appeared.

- I have 2 questions on the 1.1 winsock spec regarding FD_WRITE.
- First, if a winsock client calls WSAAsyncSelect a second time, will

-
- Second, why are send() and sentto() listed as re-enabling functions
- for FD_WRITE (on p. 90)? Each time send() is called the winsock

- after a send() or sentto() fails, and then buffer space becomes

-
- Hey, my school decided to cripple it's students by installing AppleTalk!
-
- Meanwhile, I am working on helping all the *marginalized* PC users get

- I have Farallon's Phone net software and some DOS based (Stanford) IP

- I have installed the Crynwr Appletlk.com packet driver successfully, and
- WINPKT boots OK, but in Windows, the TCPman refuses to start, giving the

-
- Is this insurmountable because I am on a dumb network?
- Any advice would be greatly appreciated by the poor PC users of Swarthmore.

- You'll need to be very, very careful doing this, that the information
- exchanged is interpreted the same on both sides. PCs (depending on your
- compilation tools, etc) are 16 bit vs. 32 bit. Also, some compilers pad

- Correct; read is a Unix-ism, and sockets under WinSock are not the same as
- file handles, though in some implementations they can be.

-
- The latter is definitely *not* a true statement. It will read the # of bytes
- sent, or the # of bytes you ask, or perhaps a lesser #, though not more. It
- is most certainly a binary read, not "data sensitive".

- I'd check the structure passing. If it were me, I'd probably encode the data
- in the structure into a series of strings of some sort, delimited in some
- fashion using a character that wouldn't appear in the string (such as new
